
Every time a university IT committee starts an LMS evaluation, the same four names appear on the spreadsheet: Moodle, Open edX, Canvas (open source), and Chamilo. The presentations look similar. The feature matrices look similar. But the infrastructure realities, the staffing requirements, and the failure modes are completely different.
This comparison is written from the perspective of someone who has deployed three of these four in production and evaluated the fourth in a staging environment. The goal is not to declare a winner — it’s to give infrastructure teams the information they need to make the right choice for their specific constraints.
The single most important factor for self-hosted deployments is the minimum infrastructure required to run the platform reliably. “Reliably” means: survives a Monday morning when 2,000 students log in simultaneously.

Moodle and Chamilo are both PHP/MySQL-heritage platforms. You can run them on infrastructure a single sysadmin understands. Open edX and Canvas require significantly more operational expertise and hardware — they were designed to run in cloud environments with elastic scaling, not on a fixed server budget.
Moodle is the default choice for a reason. Its Docker Compose setup is well-documented, the PHP stack is familiar to most university IT staff, and the plugin ecosystem (1,700+ plugins) covers nearly every pedagogical use case without custom development.
The self-hosting story for Moodle is genuinely straightforward. A minimal production docker-compose.yml:

Where Moodle struggles: the upgrade path between major versions (e.g., 4.1 → 4.3) is non-trivial. Plugin compatibility breaks. The database schema migrations can take 30+ minutes on large installations. And Moodle’s UI, while functional, remains less intuitive than its competitors — faculty onboarding always requires training.
Open edX (now maintained by the Open edX community after Edx.org’s acquisition by 2U) is the platform that serious online course providers use: MIT OpenCourseWare, Harvard’s online programs, and many national MOOCs run on it.
The technical capability is genuine. Open edX supports xBlock components, sophisticated assessment types (drag-and-drop, custom graded inputs), cohort-based learning paths, and a learning analytics infrastructure that Moodle can’t match out of the box.
The infrastructure cost is also genuine. A production Open edX deployment requires:
The community-maintained tutor tool has made Open edX deployment significantly more accessible since 2022. But “accessible” is relative. You still need someone comfortable with Docker Compose, Python package management, and the concept of Kubernetes for anything above ~500 concurrent users.
For institutions whose primary use case is delivering structured online courses to large cohorts — not running day-to-day classroom LMS functions — Open edX is a serious option. For institutions that need basic course delivery, gradebook, and assignment submission, it is significant overkill.
Canvas’s open source release is real. It is on GitHub. It has active commits. But it was not designed with self-hosting in mind — it was designed to run on Instructure’s managed infrastructure, and the open source release is effectively a secondary priority.
The API is genuinely excellent. Canvas’s REST API is one of the most developer-friendly in the LMS space: consistent pagination, comprehensive endpoint coverage, clean OAuth2 flows. If your institution needs to build custom integrations — connecting the LMS to a custom SIS, building a faculty dashboard, automating enrollment workflows — Canvas’s API surface makes the development work much faster than Moodle’s RPC-style web services.
The trade-off is everything else. Asset compilation requires specific legacy Node.js and Ruby versions. Background workers (Sidekiq) need careful tuning. The upgrade process involves running migration files in sequence, recompiling assets, and restarting workers — and there is no clean rollback if something goes wrong mid-migration.
My honest assessment: Canvas open source is viable for institutions that already have Ruby on Rails developers on staff. For everyone else, the operational burden is not justified by the API quality.
Chamilo is the LMS that gets dismissed too quickly in enterprise evaluations because it lacks the brand recognition of Moodle or Canvas. That’s a mistake if your requirements are modest.
Chamilo runs on a standard PHP/MySQL LAMP stack. Its system requirements are genuinely minimal — a $20/month VPS can run Chamilo for a department of 300 students without performance problems. The admin interface is cleaner than Moodle’s. Course creation is fast. The learning curve for non-technical faculty is lower than any other platform on this list.
Where Chamilo falls short: the plugin ecosystem is tiny compared to Moodle. The REST API is limited. LTI 1.3 support is present but not as mature as Moodle or Canvas. There is no equivalent to Open edX’s xBlock system for complex assessment types. And the development community, while active, is significantly smaller than Moodle’s — which means security patches and major feature additions come more slowly.
For a single department, a training organization, or an institution with a limited IT budget and straightforward course delivery needs, Chamilo is the most pragmatic choice on this list.
1. “Open source” does not mean “free to operate at scale.”
Open edX’s infrastructure cost for 5,000 concurrent users on AWS will exceed most university SaaS LMS contracts. The software license is free; the engineering team to run it is not. Moodle and Chamilo are genuinely operable by a single experienced sysadmin. Open edX and Canvas at scale require a dedicated DevOps function.
2. Plugin lock-in is as real as vendor lock-in.
Institutions that run Moodle for 10 years accumulate custom plugins, customized themes, and bespoke grading workflows that depend on specific Moodle internals. Migrating to Open edX means rebuilding all of that. Course content can be exported (IMS packages, Moodle backup format), but institutional logic — custom rubrics, department-specific grade calculations, SSO integrations — does not migrate. Budget 12–18 months for a platform migration of any substance.
3. The “active open source community” metric is misleading.
Canvas’s GitHub repository has many commits. Many of those commits are from Instructure employees working on the SaaS product, with the open source release as a downstream. When you hit a self-hosting bug that doesn’t affect the SaaS product, community support is thin. Moodle’s community, by contrast, is genuinely self-hosting-oriented — the people answering forum questions are the people running their own servers.

None of these platforms is wrong. All of them have been deployed successfully at scale. The wrong choice is picking based on a feature checklist without accounting for the engineering capacity required to operate it.
