Now, test connectivity. Replace dc01.example.edu and DC=example,DC=edu with your actual values:

  • Host URL: This should be ldap://dc01.example.edu:389 or, preferably, ldaps://dc01.example.edu:636. For high availability, list multiple hosts separated by spaces: ldaps://dc01.example.edu:636 ldaps://dc02.example.edu:636.
  • Version: Set this to 3. Active Directory uses LDAPv3.
  • Use TLS: If you’re using ldap:// on port 389, you absolutely must check “Yes” here for StartTLS. If you’re using ldaps:// on port 636, you can leave this as “No” because TLS is implicitly used. I’ve spent 8 hours debugging connection issues when a client insisted on ldap:// without StartTLS, expecting secure communication. It simply doesn’t work that way.
  • Bind DN: This is the distinguished name of an Active Directory user account Moodle will use to search the directory. This account needs read permissions on the OUs containing your users and groups. For example: CN=Moodle Service,OU=Service Accounts,DC=example,DC=edu.
  • Bind Password: The password for the Bind DN user.
  • Base DN: As discussed, this is where Moodle will start searching for users. E.g., OU=Users,DC=example,DC=edu.
  • User type: active directory.
  • Search subcontexts: “Yes”. This allows Moodle to search through sub-OUs within your Base DN.
  • User attribute: sAMAccountName. This is the most common attribute for usernames in Active Directory.
  • Object Class: user. This filters results to only include user objects.
  • Account NTLM / Kerberos: “No” for typical LDAP authentication. Moodle uses standard LDAP binds.

Mapping Active Directory Attributes to Moodle User Fields

This section is vital for populating user profiles correctly. Scroll down to the “Data mapping” section. Moodle needs to know which Active Directory attributes correspond to its internal user fields. Here are common mappings I use:

  • First name: givenName
  • Last name: sn (surname)
  • Email address: mail
  • City: l (locality)
  • Country: co (country code)
  • Description: description
  • Department: department
  • Language: Moodle defaults to en if not provided. You could map preferredLanguage if it’s consistently set in AD, but I rarely see that.

I highly recommend against Moodle managing passwords if AD is your source of truth. Set “Update local passwords” to “No” and “Password expiration” to “No”. You want AD to handle all password policy.

Synchronizing User Data and Group Memberships from Active Directory to Moodle

  • Object Class (group): group or groupOfNames or groupOfUniqueNames depending on your AD schema (usually just group).
  • Group Name attribute: cn (Common Name).
  • Member attribute: member or memberUid. For Active Directory, it’s typically member which holds the full DN of the member.

The enrolment plugin allows you to map specific AD group names to Moodle courses or roles. For example, an AD group CN=Moodle_Biology_101_Students,OU=Moodle Groups,... could enroll users into the “Biology 101” course with “Student” role. This significantly reduces manual administration.   2. Users can’t log in despite correct credentials, Moodle shows “Invalid login”: The Base DN or User Attribute is incorrect, or the Bind DN doesn’t have read permissions to the user objects.

    • Fix: Re-verify your Base DN using ldp.exe or ADSI Edit. Make sure the Bind DN can indeed read the users you’re trying to authenticate. A quick way to test the Bind DN’s permissions from the Moodle server:

      If this fails, your Bind DN or password is wrong, or it lacks permissions.
  3. User accounts are created, but fields like email, first name are blank or incorrect: This is a data mapping problem. The Active Directory attributes you’re mapping don’t exist for the user, or you’ve misspelled them in Moodle’s configuration.

    • Fix: Use ldp.exe or ADSI Edit to inspect a sample user object in Active Directory. Note the exact attribute names (case-sensitive!) that hold the first name, last name, and email. For example, givenName for first name, not firstName. Correct the mappings in Moodle.
  4. LDAP synchronization cron job times out for large directories: This happened to me with a client migrating 80,000 user accounts. The PHP script was hitting max_execution_time limits.

    • Fix: Increase max_execution_time and memory_limit in your php.ini file for the CLI SAPI (often a separate php.ini from your web server, e.g., /etc/php/8.x/cli/php.ini). I typically set max_execution_time = 0 (no limit) and memory_limit = 1024M for CLI scripts on dedicated sync servers. If your institution uses multiple services (Moodle, a student information system, a library portal, etc.) and you want users to log in once and access everything, you need a different approach.

I’ve always advocated for a centralized identity provider for a true SSO experience. My strong recommendation is to implement a solution like Keycloak. Keycloak can integrate with Active Directory via LDAP, and then Moodle (along with your other applications) can integrate with Keycloak using SAML2 or OpenID Connect.
